Google Pixel 2 (Walleye) leak: Big bezels, front-facing stereo speakers, and a missing headphone jack

Google doesn’t care about industry trends. One of its upcoming phones, the smaller Pixel 2, won’t have key features that are common in 2017 flagships. Instead it’ll have some things you see in the modern flagship and some things from the past. There isn’t a real focus on design here, that’s for sure.

The hype train for Google’s next batch of hardware is moving fast, and it’s gaining serious momentum now that new reports are coming out frequently. Google just can’t hide many of the major details regarding the Pixel 2. Today we’re getting a wealth of information, including an image, in a single leak from Evan Blass of VentureBeat.

Here’s a live shot of Walleye, the smaller of the two phones coming later this year:

It’ll be HTC, who partnered with Google in 2016 for the Pixel, manufacturing Walleye. Blass says Google won’t be enlisting the same company for the other, bigger model. Instead it’ll be a Nexus-style approach in which two companies make two different phones. LG has been tapped to assemble Taimen, the spiritual success to the Pixel XL. Both, though, will have a single camera on their backs rather than embracing the dual-camera setups we’ve seen on phones like the OnePlus 5.

A headphone jack will also be missing from Walleye and Taimen. The phones will rely on Bluetooth technology for wireless connections to other devices. Because of the omission, Google is expected to include an adapter that creates a headphone jack through the USB-C port.

The large bezels above and below the display on the smaller model are evident. They won’t be carried over to Taimen, however. HTC’s going to bring similar bezels over from the 2016 Pixel to Walleye while LG is going to copy the FullVision 18:9 display from the G6 for the larger model. Despite the difference in bezels, Google will have front-facing stereo speakers on its phones for the first time since 2015.

A launch event for Google’s next Pixel phones should happen next month, and the release date for Walleye and Taimen would then be sometime in October.
