Melbourne has once again been named as the world’s most ‘liveable’ city for the seventh year in a row.

After ranking 140 destinations each year on healthcare, education, stability, culture, environment and infrastructure, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EUI) Liveability Index has revealed the best and worst places to live in the world.

Melbourne, Australia, has been hailed as the most “livable” city in the world for the seventh consecutive year.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual index, titled “The Global Liveability Report 2017,” considers 30 qualitative and quantitative factors to rank 140 cities in order of best living conditions. Those factors include benchmarks like health care, education, infrastructure, stability and culture/environment, among others. The cities are scored overall from ideal to intolerable on a 100-point scale.

Melbourne scored a 97.5 in the assessment, landing perfect scores in health care, education and infrastructure. It also scored over 95 in stability and culture/environment. Vienna, Austria, came in a close second, missing the top spot by just 0.1 percentage point.

Australian cities dominated the top of the index, with Adelaide and Perth joining Melbourne in the top 10. Canada also held a commanding presence in the ranking, boasting three cities as well. It may come as no surprise that both countries also ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s leading Best Countries. Canada also finished No. 1 in the Best Countries’ Quality of Life sub-ranking, and Australia ranked No. 4.

New Zealand‘s Auckland, Finland‘s Helsinki and Germany‘s Hamburg rounded out the top 10 Best Cities to Live.

Cities in the United States – roiled by civil unrest linked to the Black Lives Mattermovement and President Donald Trump‘s domestic and global policies – did not rank in the top 15, according to the index.

Cities that ranked the lowest in the index were marked by terrorism and civil unrest, according to the index. In the most extreme cases, the cities were plagued by civil war. Damascus, Syria, was viewed as the least livable with a 30.2 overall ranking.
